In an atmosphere of safety, privacy, and confidentiality, we provide a range of services at the TEMENOS Center for alcohol and drug problems. We can help you to get sober and stay that way, with individual recovery-oriented therapy, relapse prevention counseling, couples therapy for couples with a recovering partner, and other specialized services for people in recovery.
We also offer alternative treatments for chronic pain which can lessen your reliance on habit-forming medications. Some of our therapists, besides being fully licensed in their respective professions, also have specialty certification in alcohol and drug treatment, such as the Certification in Treatment of Substance Use Disorders from the APA College of Professional Psychology.
Our approach is non-confrontational, gentle, compassionate, and supportive. Call us at (856) 722 9043, ex. 9 to talk to an addiction specialist about getting help, or email us at inquiry@temenoscenter.com. You can start on the path to recovery today with that first call.
We can help you with any of these problems. Depression and anxiety are widespread problems, but not everyone is aware that psychotherapy with a well-trained and experienced therapist has been shown by numerous studies to be as effective or more effective than medication, with longer lasting improvement and no side effects. Our compassionate therapists provide psychotherapy for anxiety and depression, and also some biological and behavioral treatments, such as meditation training and breathing techniques for anxiety, and light-exposure treatment for seasonal mood disorders. Often, current interpersonal issues are contributing to problems with anxiety and depression, and psychotherapy can help to resolve them and provide long lasting improvement.

One of the most difficult things in life is losing someone or something you love. Have you lost a close friend? A parent? A child? A job? A family business? A husband or wife? A vital part of your health? A home? A favored pet? Are physical changes due to aging or illness getting you down?
Many emotions arise at such a time, including sadness, anger, loneliness, and fear. Often your friends and family are unable to be as present to you as you would like, and there may be things you do not want to discuss with them. Possibly they are experiencing the loss as well.
Here at TEMENOS we are trained to help you to heal from whatever losses life may have dealt you and support you in integrating your loss and re-engaging with your life.

Do you find yourself eating past fullness, only to feel wracked with guilt afterwards? Do you limit your calorie intake, purge, or exercise as a way to “burn off” the food you just ate? These, and other symptoms, may indicate that you or a loved one suffers from an eating disorder, and we at the TEMENOS Center, can help.
With decades of experience, our licensed therapists can help you to modify your eating pattern so that you can get back to eating normally again. In addition, we will help you to identify the origins of the problem so that you can find better ways to cope from this point forward. We have a nutritionist on our staff who specializes in both eating issues and sports nutrition, and she can help you find the right balance between nourishment and activity.

Some family therapists have likened a family to a mobile. When one part of the mobile moves, the other parts move in response. Similarly, when one member of a family changes, other family members change in response. The goal of family therapy is to improve the balance and stability of the family system, while the role of the therapist is to attend to each part of the structure. A family’s resilience and support has a powerful ability to heal each member from pain and adversity.
When a family member, especially a child or adolescent, is symptomatic in some way, such as struggling with an eating disorder, substance abuse, school or behavioral problems, the child is often expressing through destructive actions something he or she cannot put into words. The family therapist will help the family “de-code” the message and find a way to use this information for the growth and development of the whole family.

We human beings often dislike change and have a hard time handling it. Some of the challenging transitions in life can be:
The loss of a loved one through separation, divorce, or death • The first few years after college and living on one’s own • Planning a wedding and getting married • Buying a house or moving to a new area
During transitions, people need support, stress reduction, strategies for keeping up self-esteem, and a caring and safe place to talk about how life is for them right now. They also need to adjust to their new lives at their own pace, even when others encourage them to “move on.”
Anxiety, tension, excitement, grief, paralysis, anticipation, and confusion are only a few of the vast range of emotions associated with life transitions. We at the TEMENOS Center can help you to cope with the range of thoughts and feelings that come with the experience of change, to identify the fears and concerns that may hinder you from moving forward, and to convert struggle into creativity and momentum.
Our approach can include individual and/or couples or family therapy, depending on what you would feel to be most helpful. You can count on each of our highly trained professionals to be supportive and understanding.

Midlife can be a time of tremendous transition, growth, and complexity. Many in midlife find themselves coping with aging family members, an “empty nest,” or hormonal and other physical changes. Long term relationship difficulties may come into focus at this time. Feelings about our bodies and sexuality may undergo changes. Some may experience a solidification of identity and meaning, while some may experience midlife as a “last chance” to explore roads not taken. Some are grieving and struggling to accept life events or choices, such as a divorce, a loss through death, or regrets about career or family decisions. Some may be seeking new ways to understand themselves or to express themselves creatively. Or those in midlife may decide that it is “now or never” and choose to address longstanding issues with drug or alcohol dependence or abuse, depression, anxiety, or relationship problems. Whatever the issue, midlife is often a time of emotional tumult, and psychotherapy can provide valuable support and insight.

In addition to life issues that can occur at any age, such as relationship problems, sleeplessness, anxiety, depression, and chronic stress, some particular challenges are more common as we age. These include chronic or life-threatening illness, loneliness, grieving, chronic pain, fear of disability, and decisions about housing and care.
A widespread but generally hidden health problem is one of addiction, be it to alcohol or prescription drugs. This is because older bodies process substances differently, and accidental addiction may be the result.
At Temenos we understand that for many older adults, seeking help is a particularly big step. We want you to know that we are here to understand what life is like for you and to help you move at your own pace toward your preferred solutions. We also know that every difficulty in life also presents an opportunity for growth and emotional healing for ourselves and those around us, and that it is never too late to heal emotions and relationships.

Psychological trauma, unlike physical trauma, does not show, since the wounds are emotional. But it can impact our lives greatly.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone who experiences any type of trauma, from military combat to an auto accident to sexual, physical or emotional abuse. Not everyone who experiences a trauma develops PTSD, but those who do can struggle for months or years with painful and difficult symptoms. Emotional difficulties can occur immediately or sometime later. Problems can include sleeplessness, irritability, flashbacks, angry outbursts, nervousness, fearfulness, overreactions and relationship difficulties. It is common to develop addictions as an attempt to deal with these frequently overwhelming situations and emotions. (See Alcohol and Drug Addiction.)
Most of us are trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a technique that has been proven to be very effective in treating many kinds of trauma and PTSD, and we all use other integrative techniques to teach relaxation and help you heal from the effects of trauma. Psychotherapy can help you begin to make sense of what you have been through and put the trauma behind you.
Using a variety of techniques, we work with our clients who struggle with PTSD to reduce and gradually eliminate symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, or anxiety. Basically, treatment for PTSD consists in telling your story in a safe environment and processing it in the context of a supportive and caring relationship. Once processed, the memory of the experience is no longer disruptive to your life, and becomes a normal memory of a bad event, instead of a constant re-living of it.
Many people who struggle with PTSD have come to experience the world as a dangerous place. At TEMENOS, we work to help people to develop and maintain a realistic sense of safety as a foundation for further emotional growth. Part of the goal is to integrate the trauma and the rest of life (both good and bad) into a new, albeit more complex understanding of the world. We have found that developing this type of coherent “life story” helps people have the perspective and strength necessary to take new risks towards happiness.
